Description
Summary:The Ichneumonidae family is the largest of all Hymenoptera (and possibly of all the fauna) since it contains more than 100,000 species distributed in almost all the terrestrial ecosystems of the world but especially in the temperate and humid tropical ones; in the Neotropical region the existence of more than 35,000 species is estimated. Its contribution to the natural regulation of the populations of many other insects is extensive. In Applied Biological Control it has been used successfully to fight forest pests, fruit crops and some vegetables and extensive crops. The Mexican Republic has 914 identified species of ichneumonids. However, the estimate of the number of species present in our country is greater than 3,000 species. The Mexican southeast is a vast region with a great diversity of climates and vegetation types, which has favored the presence of many species of parasitic wasps. This work includes 342 morphospecies although only 110 have been identified; many of the non-determined ones can be new species, so the taxonomic work with this family requires more specialists and support to the research institutions.
