He belonged to that generation Spanish that incorporated Spain into the universal scientific current. Author of many and remarkable research works on various points of geometric optics, physics, physiology and nuclear energy; Otero discovered nocturnal myopia in 1942. The issue of nighttime myopia was vital in World War II. In aerial combat, the pilot who before distinguished the enemy had a definite advantage, and the same happened at sea. In the visual acuity of the binoculars and periscopes was the key to everything. The importance of the finding was extraordinary because, had its discovery been known, 66% visual acuity could have been gained. José María Otero de Navascués Enríquez de la Sota, Marqués de Hermosilla y Contralmirante Ingeniero de la Armada, de origen navarro, nació en Madrid el 16 de marzo de 1907 y murió en la misma capital el 9 de marzo de 1983. Perteneció a aquella generación española que incorporó a España a la corriente científica universal. Autor de muchos y notables trabajos de investigación sobre diversos puntos de la óptica geométrica, física, fisiología y sobre energía nuclear; Otero descubrió en 1942 la miopía nocturna. El asunto de la miopía nocturna fue vital en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En un combate aéreo, el piloto qe antes distinguiera al enemigo tenía una ventaja definitiva, y lo mismo sucedía en el mar. En la agudeza visual de los prismáticos y periscopios estaba la clave de todo. La importancia del hallazgo fue extraordinaria pues, de haberse conocido su descubrimiento, se hubiera podido ganar el 66% de agudeza visual.
