The distance is no longer a problem in international trade however, strategies to facilitate not only flow of goods but also information have become a challenge for companies. The Logistics Performance Index (LPI) from Connecting to Compete report elaborated by the World Bank since 2007 is an analysis tool for countries. This report evaluates six logistics indicators at more than 160 countries and demonstrates strengths and opportunities faced by countries to be more competitive in the global economy. Therefore, the general objective of this research is to describe the importance of the logistics performance in the international trade of Mexico. LPI reports from 2012 to 2016 were analyzed. Five interviews were conducted with experts in Mexico. Customs and infrastructure for trade are the most important tasks to improve Mexican logistics performance with the support of public and private sectors. As a conclusion, the future of the mexican international trade will depend on an efficient supply chain based on three pillars: environment, human resorces and technology. La globalización de mercados y la producción genera una conexión cada vez más estrecha entre naciones. La distancia deja de ser un problema en el comercio exterior, sin embargo, las estrategias para facilitar no solo el flujo de mercancías sino también de información se ha convertido en un reto para las empresas. El Indice de Desempeño Logístico (IDL) del reporte Connecting to Compete elaborado por el Banco Mundial a partir de 2007, se convierte en herramienta de análisis para los países. Los seis indicadores logísticos evaluados a más de 160 países demuestran fortalezas y oportunidades que enfrentan los países para ser más competitivos en la economía global. Por lo tanto, el objetivo general de esta investigación es describir la importancia del desempeño logístico de México en el comercio exterior. Se analizaron los resultados del IDL del 2012 al 2016 y se realizaron cinco entrevistas a expertos en la disciplina en México. Aduanas e infraestructura son las tareas más importantes para mejorar el desempeño logístico mexicano con el apoyo de los sectores público y privado. Se concluye que el futuro del comercio exterior en México dependerá de una eficiente cadena de suministro sostenible en tres pilares: medio ambiente, capital humano y tecnología.
