Although meta-analysis has had a widely used on areas of knowledge such as medicine, those devoted to the study of human behavior has been less use. In this paper we describe the characteristics of this type of study, distinguishing it from other methodological approaches such as systematic review and bibliometrics, analyzing the potential benefits using this particular type of study in the behavioral sciences. El metaanálisis se puede observar desde distintas perspectivas dependiendo del objetivo que se tenga, tradicionalmente y por origen es un método que tiene como propósito determinar el tamaño de efecto de un compilado de estudios primarios, también puede ser utilizado como un visor del camino recorrido en una determinada disciplina, o una herramienta para evaluar la calidad de la producción científica. Si bien el metaanálisis ha tenido una amplío uso en áreas del conocimiento como la Medicina, en aquellas dedicadas al estudio del comportamiento humano su empleo ha sido menor. En el presente trabajo se describen las características de este tipo de estudio, distinguiéndolo de otras aproximaciones metodológicas como la revisión sistemática y la bibliometría, analizando las ventajas que puede ofrecer el empleo de este particular tipo de estudio a las ciencias del comportamiento.
