Aunque todas son muy parecidas, pertenecen a diferentes especies del género Yucca y también reciben diferentes nombres comunes por los habitantes del medio rural. Por su aspecto, con tallos altos y hojas en roseta, constantemente son llamadas “palmas” aunque en realidad no pertenecen a esta familia y curiosamente están más emparentadas con la cebolla y el ajo con quienes regularmente se combinan en la cocina.
