In 2015 as a result of a reform in the university ́s management system, these units became Permanent Education facilities (UNAEP), to meet the specific demands throughout the state. The paper explains the transition from distance education to permanent education, from a theoretical view that justifies such innovation. The study in cludes some observations of the context, it explores the dimension of change and ends with a final reflection to provide guidance for further recommendations. Hace 15 años la Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas implementó un Sistema de Unidades de Educación a Distancia (UNAED), ubicadas en lugares alejados de los campus universitarios, para ofrecer, con éxito relativo, programas de Profesional Asociado y Maestría. A partir del año 2015 con una reforma al sistema de gestión universitaria, esas unidades se convirtieron en Educación Permanente (UNAEP), para atender demandas específicas de las comunidades del estado. El documento explica la transición de educación a dis- tancia hacia educación permanente, desde una perspectiva teórica que justifica esta innovación. El estudio bosqueja algunas observaciones del contexto, explora la di- mensión del cambio y termina con una reflexión final para orientar posteriores recomendaciones.
