Changes in the environment require higher education institutions that provide a competitive quality offer and whose graduates have the professional and technological skills to face the challenges and demands of the society. Currently, the use and adoption of information technologies in educational institutions continues to be an important topic of analysis, since, althou-gh it offers tools to support the academic activities of students, its incorporation into the teaching-learning processes faces several challenges. This research examines the importance of the use and adoption of information technologies in higher edu-cation and addresses the study of training needs and required skills, both basic, professional and ethical in this area. The re-search considers the differences by gender in the different types of competencies and training needs. For this research, students from the accounting, administration and computer science courses of a university located in the state of Tamaulipas have been taken as a case study. La globalización y el desarrollo de las tecnologías de la información han tenido un impacto en diversos sectoresde la sociedad, incluyendo el educativo. Los cambios en el entorno requieren de instituciones de educación superior que brinden una oferta competitiva de calidad y cuyos egresados cuenten con las competencias profesionales y tecnológicas para hacer frente a los desafíos y exigencias de la sociedad. Actualmente el uso y adopción de las tecnologías de información en las instituciones educativas sigue siendo un tema importante de análisis, pues, si bien ofrece herramientas para apoyar a las actividades aca-démicas de los estudiantes, su incorporación en los procesos de enseñanza aprendizaje enfrenta diversos desafíos. Esta inves-tigación examina la importancia del uso y adopción de las tecnologías de la información en la educación superior y aborda el estudio de las necesidades formativas y competencias digitales requeridas, tanto básicas, como profesionales y éticas en este rubro. La investigación considera las diferencias por género en los distintos tipos de competencias y necesidades formativas. Para esta investigación se ha tomado como caso de estudio a los alumnos de las carreras de contaduría, administración e infor-mática de una universidad ubicada en el estado de Tamaulipas.
