The results are discussed under the light of the contributions regarding change from the institutional and new sociological institutionalism views. It is concluded that, the possibilities that each public university in Mexico has to situate in one of the four scenarios proposed, will depend on both, the endogenous characteristics of each organization and the exogenous conditions associated to the politic and economic dynamics. A partir de una metodología prospectiva, se dibujan cuatro escenarios futuribles de la universidad pública en México. Para ello, y a partir de la revisión de la literatura sobre los debates en cuanto al impacto del neoliberalismo en las universidades, se consideran a la misión social y a la autonomía universitaria como variables clave/motoras. Los resultados se discuten en el marco de los aportes sobre el cambio desde el enfoque institucional y del nuevo institucionalismo sociológico. Se concluye que las posibilidades de transitar hacia uno de los cuatro escenarios propuestos dependerán tanto de las condiciones endógenas a las organizaciones como del comportamiento de las condiciones exógenas asociadas a la dinámica político-económica.
